Subnautica 2 has native online co-op — no third-party patch, mod, or crack is needed. This is the first game in the series to feature official multiplayer. You can play through the entire game in co-op right from Early Access launch.
Player Count
Up to 4 players: you plus up to 3 friends.
Does It Need a “Multiplayer Patch”?
No. Subnautica 2 supports co-op out of the box.
Unlike some games that release without multiplayer and later rely on community-made patches, Subnautica 2 has built-in co-op as a core feature. If you see a third-party site offering a “Subnautica 2 co-op patch” or “联机补丁,” it is either outdated information carried over from the original Subnautica (which did not have official co-op) or a scam. The feature is already in the game.
To start, just open the in-game multiplayer menu — no external tools needed.

Crossplay works between all supported PC and Xbox platforms. Save files and progression are shared within a session but are not transferable between platforms.
Host a Co-op Session
- Make sure your game is updated to the current version.
- Open the multiplayer menu from the main screen.
- Choose the host option.
- Start or load the world you want to play in.
- Invite friends from your platform friend list, or share the in-game Friend Code if the friend does not appear in your list.
The host’s connection quality affects all players — a stable internet connection with UPnP enabled is recommended.
Join a Friend
- Make sure your game is on the same version as the host.
- Open the multiplayer menu.
- Use the join option if the host appears in your friend list.
- If the host does not appear, use the Friend Code option and enter the code shown on the host’s screen.
- Join while the host session is still open.
Session Checklist
Before inviting friends, confirm these:
- Same build — all players must be on the same current version. Version mismatches are the most common cause of connection failures.
- Friend list or Friend Code — try the platform friend list first, then use the in-game Friend Code fallback.
- Host first — the host starts the session, then sends invites.
- Network — the host should have a stable upload connection. NAT issues can prevent friends from connecting; enabling UPnP on the router or using a game VPN/accelerator may help.
Architecture Notes
Subnautica 2 uses peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting rather than dedicated servers. This means:
- The host’s internet connection carries all gameplay traffic.
- If the host disconnects, the session ends for all players.
- NAT type on the host’s network can affect whether friends can connect.
For the best experience, the host should have a wired internet connection with UPnP enabled on their router. If UPnP is not an option, manually forwarding ports may help (consult your router documentation).
Upcoming Co-op Features (Roadmap)
The next major Early Access update, EA 1.2, focuses on co-op enhancements. Planned features include:
| Feature | Notes |
|---|---|
| Voice chat | In-game voice communication |
| Emotes | Player emotes and gestures |
| Player trading | Trade items between session members |
| Revive mechanic | Revive downed teammates |
These features are on the development roadmap and may change before release.
Solo vs Co-op
| Solo | Co-op | |
|---|---|---|
| Players | 1 | Up to 4 |
| Progression | Your own save | Shared session |
| Invite setup | Not needed | Host invites friends or shares a Friend Code |
| Pause | Full pause available | No pause while connected |
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Invite does not appear | Platform network status and friend list sync. |
| Friend does not appear | Use the Friend Code option instead of waiting. |
| Cannot join session | Check game version match, platform account connection, and whether the host session is still open. |
| Connection times out / “NAT” errors | Host should enable UPnP on their router, check firewall settings, or try a game VPN/accelerator. |
| Session feels broken | Restart the session before assuming save corruption. |
| Host disconnects suddenly | P2P session ends when the host leaves. Consider designating a stable host. |
