First Priorities
Your first goal is to stabilize oxygen, water, and food, then unlock scanning and base building. Follow this order rather than wandering — you will run out of oxygen or hunger capacity quickly if you skip early tool crafts.
The core loop: gather near the Lifepod, craft essential tools, scan everything, then build a base to unlock the full tech tree.
First-Session Checklist
- Collect Titanium near the Lifepod and craft the Survival Multitool (3 Titanium at Fabricator)
- Collect Water Slugs from the ocean floor; distill them into water at the Fabricator
- Gather Copper and Acidic Raion Pouches to make a Basic Battery
- Find Quartz inside orange Coral Domes and craft the Scanner (2 Titanium + 2 Quartz + 1 Basic Battery)
- Scan two Flashlight targets in containers to unlock the blueprint
- Find an Angel Comb northeast of the Lifepod to unlock Digestion Adaptation
- Gather Lucifer Rotsac for Rubber, Fibrous Pulp for Fiber; craft Fins and a Standard Air Tank
- Find Silver in caves northwest of the Lifepod — needed for the Air Tank and Wiring Kits
- Scan two Habitat Builder targets to unlock base building
- Build a first base with a Fabricator, power, and storage
Water & Food
Water
Water Slugs are translucent blue creatures found on the ocean floor near the Lifepod. Collect them and process them into drinkable water at the Lifepod Fabricator under the Sustenance menu. This is your most reliable early hydration source.
Food
Your character starts with Digestive Incompatibility — you cannot eat native flora or fauna without getting sick. The Lifepod storage contains a few Nutrient Blocks to get you through the first outings.
To unlock proper eating, find an Angel Comb — a large pink plant northeast of the Lifepod. Interact with it to gain the Digestion Adaptation, which lets you safely eat native fish and plants. After that, use the Survival Multitool to cut Fibrous Pulp from plants and craft food at the Fabricator.

| Basic Battery | Powers Scanner and other tools | 2 Copper + 2 Acidic Raion Pouches | Craft at Fabricator |
| Flashlight | See in dark areas and caves | Scanned blueprints | Scan 2 targets from containers |
| Fins | Swim faster | Rubber + Fiber | Craft at Lifepod Fabricator |
| Standard Air Tank | +30 oxygen capacity | Requires Silver | Craft at Lifepod Fabricator |
| Air Bladder | Emergency 25 oxygen boost | Rubber + 2 Titanium | Craft at Lifepod Fabricator |
| Habitat Builder | Build bases and place equipment | Scanned blueprints | Scan 2 degraded targets |
| Sonic Resonator | Harvest large nodes, cut Bloom Biofilm | Scanned blueprints | Scan to unlock |
Material Notes
- Rubber: Crafted from Lucifer Rotsac (orange ball-shaped pickups on the seafloor) at the Fabricator
- Fiber: Crafted from Fibrous Pulp (cut from plants with the Survival Multitool)
- Quartz: Found inside and around orange Coral Domes above water
- Copper: Gathered near underwater caves below the Lifepod
- Silver: Found in caves northwest of the Lifepod. Prioritize collecting it — it blocks Air Tank and Wiring Kit crafts
- Acidic Raion Pouches: Cut from purple/green plants on the seafloor with the Survival Multitool
- Oxygen Tunics (blue bubble plants): Touch them mid-dive to refill oxygen — mark their locations as emergency refill points
Inventory Management
You start with limited inventory space. Expand it through these methods:
- Portable Lockers (15 slots each): Found during exploration in wrecks and ruins. Pick them up and carry them back to your Lifepod or base.
- Biobeds: Located inside Colonist Bunkers. Interacting with a Biobed permanently increases your inventory slot count.
- Pin recipes in the Fabricator (right-click) to see needed materials on-screen — take only what you need for your current goal.
- Exception: When you find Silver or Lead, grab as much as your inventory allows.
Early Progression Path
Follow NOA Missions
Interact with NOA on your Lifepod when you receive notifications. Black box waypoints from NOA lead you to important scans, new mechanics, and Adaptations. Check the Survival Guide in your Databank for early direction.
Scan Everything
Most blueprints require scanning 2-3 copies of the same object type. Scan flora, fauna, tools, equipment, and fragments whenever you encounter them. A full scan unlocks the blueprint for crafting.
Progression Gates
Some areas show “requires unknown tool” — this means you lack the right tool and should return later. Adaptations also gate areas: hot zones trigger Heat Intolerance until you unlock Heat Tolerance. Revisit earlier areas after unlocking new tools and air tanks.
Build a Base
A base lets you place a full Fabricator (which removes the Lifepod’s crafting restrictions), a Processor for ingots and advanced materials, and a Scanner Station to track resource locations.
First base tip: Start simple — a single corridor with a hatch is enough for early storage and a Fabricator. Expand once you have resources.
Power tip: Solar panels (Titanium + Quartz) work during the day. For night power, build near an ocean current and place a hydroelectric turbine inside the jetstream for 24/7 power. If you build far from a current, chain transmitters back to it.
Vehicle: Tadpole
The Tadpole one-person submersible can be built much earlier than you might expect. It requires a Processor, Titanium Ingots, Copper Ingot, Glass (from Quartz), a Vehicle Fabricator in a Moonpool, a Power Cell, and a System Chip. Most materials are available in the starting area.
Attach a Portable Locker to the Tadpole’s back (two small circles) to give it 15 inventory slots.
Common Early Mistakes
- Skipping the Survival Multitool — You need it to harvest Fibrous Pulp and Acidic Raion Pouches. Craft it first.
- Not scanning enough — Many blueprints need 2-3 scans of the same object. If a blueprint does not appear, you have not scanned enough targets.
- Ignoring Silver — Silver is needed for the Standard Air Tank and Wiring Kits. Search Lifepod-area caves as soon as you can.
- Building too far from resources — Keep your first base near accessible materials and within safe oxygen return range.
- Overextending without oxygen — Always plan a safe return route. Use Oxygen Tunic bubble plants as mid-dive refill points.
- Not following NOA missions — Black box waypoints lead to critical unlocks and Adaptations.
- Leaving the playable area — Red stripey walls mark the Early Access boundary. The game will destroy you if you cross.
- Trying to fight leviathans — No lethal weapons exist in Early Access. Avoid creatures instead of fighting them.
