Coral Gardens Region Overview

Your Lifepod lands in the Coral Gardens region, which contains most of the early-game biomes. The region is divided into several distinct areas, each with its own resources, depth range, and danger level.

The general rule: stick to the western half of the map during your first few hours. The further east you go, the hotter, deeper, and more dangerous the biomes become.

Shallows (Safe)

Depth: Very shallow | Threat Level: Low

The starting biome around your Lifepod. Clear water and abundant basic resources make it the best place to settle your first survival loop. Spend your opening trips gathering Titanium, Copper, Quartz, and organic materials.

Resources: Titanium, Copper, Quartz, Water Slugs, Acidic Raion Pouches, Lucifer Rotsacs, Fibrous Pulp

Creatures: Mostly small passive fish and low-risk fauna.

Tip: The cave directly beneath the Lifepod contains Copper deposits on the ceiling and walls — this is your best early Copper source.

Kelp Forest (Safe)

Depth: Shallow | Threat Level: Low

Surrounds the Shallows area. Dense kelp growth provides good cover and additional resources. It is a useful early exploration area with strong resource density.

Resources: Titanium, Lucifer Rotsacs, Fibrous Pulp, occasional cave entrances with Copper

Creatures: Small fish and mostly passive fauna in the main forest area.

Tip: The Kelp Forest connects the Shallows to most other biomes. Use the kelp stalks as visual landmarks to orient yourself.

Plateaus (Jelly Barrens) — Low Threat

Direction: North of Lifepod | Depth: Shallow to moderate | Threat Level: Low

Open sandy areas with dead jellyfish scattered across the seafloor. Contains several points of interest including Camp One and the Old Habitat. The area is manageable early, but be cautious around wrecks where Marrowbreach encounters are more likely.

Resources: Titanium, Silver (in caves), Lead (nearby Sandstone Ridges), blueprints at Camp One

Threats:

  • Marrowbreach — shark-like predator often reported near wrecks and large structures. Use terrain and distance rather than open-water races.
  • Nibbler Mango — moderate early threat found in open water.

Points of interest: Camp One to the north-northeast, Old Habitat farther north.

Anemone Hills — Low to Medium Threat

Direction: Northwest of Lifepod | Depth: Shallow to moderate | Threat Level: Medium

Rolling hills covered in pink and green anemone plants. This biome is a critical early destination for Silver. The purple jelly caves beneath the hills contain most of the Silver deposits.

Resources: Silver (caves), Necrolei Cysts, Anemone plants. A second Angel Comb here grants Heat Tolerance adaptation when struck with the Sonic Resonator.

Threats:

  • Marrowbreach — patrols the open areas. Stick close to the seafloor and use terrain as cover.
  • Minor predatory fish near cave entrances.

Tip: The purple jelly caves are shallow enough to visit early, but still easy to lose. Mark the cave entrance with a Beacon for return trips.

Sandstone Ridges (Leadzone) — Low to Medium Threat

Direction: Northeast of Lifepod | Depth: Moderate | Threat Level: Medium

Sandy ridges with reliable Lead deposits. This area connects the Coral Gardens to the eastern danger zones. The Lander Garage wreck (Cicada Wreck) is located here — a major early salvage location.

Resources: Lead, Titanium, some Silver. The Lander Garage wreck contains valuable salvage and blueprints.

Threats: Occasional medium predators. The area is generally safe if you stay near the ridges rather than venturing into deeper water.

Warning: Heading further east from here leads to the Zezuran Desert. If the water starts getting warmer and visibility drops, turn back.

Tufa Towers — Medium Threat

Direction: South–Southwest of Lifepod | Depth: Moderate | Threat Level: Medium

Rocky stalagmite formations rising from the seafloor. The main attraction is the Spider Dome (a rich Quartz source) and the Giant Jaw — a massive stationary leviathan clam.

Resources: Quartz (Spider Dome), Lithium (Giant Jaw area), Titanium

Threats:

  • Giant Jaw — stationary leviathan clam. Avoid swimming between its shells; observe its opening and closing pattern before approaching nearby objectives.
  • Minor predators in the rock formations.

Tip: The Giant Jaw area is how you unlock Heat Tolerance — Wander’s Black Box is near here. Bring the Sonic Resonator to clear Bloom Cankers blocking the path.

Danger Zones to Avoid Early

Zezuran Desert (Graveyard)

Direction: East of Lifepod | Depth: Deeper | Threat Level: High

A volcanic biome with extreme heat and deeper terrain. Contains valuable resources such as Gold and Sulfur, but treat it as a prepared trip after Heat Tolerance rather than an early detour.

Requirements to enter: Heat Tolerance adaptation (from Anemone Hills Angel Comb + Sonic Resonator), Tadpole vehicle recommended.

Warning signs: Water becomes murky and warm. Steam vents visible on the seafloor. Distant rumbling sounds. The PDA will warn you about extreme temperatures.

Sparse Plains

Direction: Far northeast | Depth: Varies | Threat Level: Extreme

The territory of the Collector Leviathan. Treat this area as late-game content until you have a vehicle and a clear escape plan.

Why it is dangerous: The Collector Leviathan reacts to player behavior and can pressure you in open water. Keep light, sound, and movement under control when crossing its territory.

Do not enter until: You have a vehicle, distraction tools, and escape routes planned.

The Void

Location: Map edge, all directions | Depth: Very deep | Threat Level: Extreme

Patrolled by Shiver Leviathans — coordinated predators that make the map edge a poor early destination.

Warning signs: The water becomes dark and empty. Ambient sounds stop completely. The PDA issues a warning when you approach the map boundary.

Recognizing Dangerous Biomes

The game provides several cues that you are entering a dangerous area. Learn to recognize these signals:

Visual Warnings

CueWhat It Means
Murky or discolored waterPossible predator territory or environmental hazard
Steam vents or heat hazeVolcanic biome — heat damage without adaptation
Sudden drop in seafloorTransition to deeper, more dangerous zone
Red stripey walls at map edgeEarly Access boundary — the game destroys you if you cross
Abandoned wreckage with no small fish nearbyActive predator zone

Audio Warnings

CueWhat It Means
Distant roar or growlPredator active in the area
Small fauna sounds stop suddenlyLeviathan or apex predator nearby
Dramatic music shiftYou have entered a danger zone
PDA temperature warningEntering a hot biome without heat protection
Sonar pulse soundThe Collector Leviathan has detected you

Follow this order to avoid venturing into biomes you are not ready for:

  1. Shallows + Kelp Forest — Gather basic resources and craft tools
  2. Welcome Center (southeast) — Unlock Biomods
  3. Angel Comb (northeast) — Unlock Digestion Adaptation
  4. Anemone Hills (northwest) — Silver for Air Tank + Wiring Kit
  5. Plateaus (north) — Camp One blueprints, Wakemaker fragments
  6. Sandstone Ridges (northeast) — Lead for Sonic Resonator
  7. Tufa Towers (south) — Quartz from Spider Dome, Giant Jaw area
  8. Graveyard (east) — Only after Heat Tolerance adaptation
  9. Further east — Observatory, Power Plant, Roots Canyon (mid-game+)

Common Mistakes

  • Heading east too early — The Graveyard looks explorable from a distance but rapidly becomes lethal without heat protection. If you see steam vents, turn around.
  • Treating all open water as safe — Predators like the Marrowbreach patrol open areas between biomes. Stay near terrain when traveling between zones.
  • Ignoring audio warnings — If the music changes or the ambient sounds stop, a predator is nearby. Stop, look around, and plan your route.
  • Exploring south without preparation — The Tufa Towers area looks inviting but the Giant Jaw can kill in one hit. Learn its pattern before approaching.
  • Not marking cave entrances — Returning to Silver caves or the Spider Dome is much easier with a Beacon. Drop one on your first visit.
  • Forgetting oxygen limits — Most early deaths are from drowning, not predators. Always plan your return route before your tank gets low.
