Where to Find Copper
Copper is a raw mineral found inside caves, not on the open seafloor. It comes from Sandstone Outcrops, Copper Veins, and Large Copper Deposits. Copper feeds into early electronics recipes including Copper Wire, Basic Battery, and Beacon.
Quick Facts
| Type | Source | Collection | Key Early Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Resource / Mineral | Sandstone Outcrops, Copper Veins, Large Copper Deposits | Hand pick, Sonic Resonator | Copper Wire (2 Copper) |
Copper Sources
Copper is found in cave systems through three source types:
| Source | Description |
|---|---|
| Sandstone Outcrops | Breakable rock formations inside caves; yields Copper when broken |
| Copper Veins | Ore veins inside caves; pick up directly |
| Large Copper Deposits | Bulkier mineral deposits deeper in cave systems; requires Sonic Resonator |
Copper is found from the shallows down to about 250m. Start with caves you encounter during early exploration.
Mid-game alternative: the Processor can convert Silver (x1) or Titanium (x5) into Copper. Both conversion recipes start locked and become available through progression.
How to Collect
| Source | Method | Tool Required |
|---|---|---|
| Sandstone Outcrop | Break open by hand | None |
| Copper Vein | Pick up directly | None |
| Large Copper Deposit | Break open the deposit | Sonic Resonator |
Small deposits in outcrops and veins are accessible from the start with no tool requirement. Large Copper Deposits become accessible once you craft the Sonic Resonator.
Used In
| Recipe | Copper Needed | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Wire | 2 | Required component for the Habitat Builder recipe |
| Basic Battery | 2 | Powers the Scanner and Habitat Builder |
| Beacon | 1 | Marks locations for return trips |
Copper also appears in additional tool and equipment recipes as you progress.
Priority
Copper is worth collecting whenever you enter a cave. The first Copper Wire costs 2 Copper and is required for the Habitat Builder. The first Basic Battery costs another 2 Copper. A good early target is 4-6 Copper to cover both the Copper Wire and first Basic Battery.
Common Blockers
“I cannot break the Large Copper Deposit.” Large deposits need the Sonic Resonator. Craft it first, then return to the deposit.
“I keep finding Titanium instead of Copper.” Titanium comes from Limestone Outcrops. Look for Sandstone Outcrops in caves for Copper instead. Sandstone Outcrops and Limestone Outcrops are different rock types.
Next Action
Collect 2 Copper and craft Copper Wire at the Fabricator for the Habitat Builder recipe. If the Habitat Builder does not appear in your Fabricator, check the Habitat Builder Blueprint page first.
